Last Practice Hike for the 3 Peak Challengers

A swarthy team of leaders were dropped at Blue Pool Near Wareham to the North of the Purbeck hills. Their aim was to climb as many hills as possible as training for the three peaks challenge they are doing on 8th July 2011.

First they climbed to the top of the Purbeck ridge and then down into deepest Purbeck before climbing the hills behind Kimmeridge and descending the beach in a howling wind.  Quick stop for a flask of coffee and then Eastwards along the volatile coastline until just before St Aubyn’s Head we went inland to Worth Matravers.

The temptation was there to stop at the inviting pub, but being true grit scout leaders we avoided such low pursuits and continued back to the coast and eventually to dancing ledge where we had our lunch in perfect sunshine.

Then the slow start following a 40 minute stop, and plenty of us pointing out that there will be no stops on the 3 peaks challenge even for a pee. The minibus windows would have to do – and that’s just the ladies!  So we climbed up to the ridge and down to Langton Matravers and across to the Purbeck ridge just west of Old Harry and then along the ridge down to Corfe Castle for a well earned refreshment. Colin was keen for a cream tea but a small hostelry got in the way.

At the end of the day we had done half the distance of the 3 peaks and 1/3rd of the ascent!
